Slopes of Vedder Ridge, as seen from the Shaved Knob across Columbia Valley.

Rode the Shaved Knob above Columbia Valley again, and then bopped up the Frost Rd. and climbed Vedder Ridge from the Frost Rd spur to the old quarry.

Met a guy in a pickup with his kid who was stealing firewood out of the DNR land on top while simulteneously getting in some quality father / son time. The guy was dragging his yarding cable down the road after him, and nearly snagged my from wheel as I was heading up.

Broke a pedal (as Mark Belles says, "you can break anything on a mountain bike"), but I was able to keep going by using the other side until I got to the top.

Approximately 1500 verts. This gives me 30,339 verts for January. Not bad, but I'll need to pick up the pace to average around 34,000 verts a month if I'm going to get 400,000 verts this year.

This is an excerpt from Vert Quest, which chronicles The Man Known As Mongo's pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period.
