Mt. Chaim in BC seen through the cut for the new mainline logging road on Red Mt.
Rode Red Mt. on a beautiful blue day. Driving up the Reese Hill Rd., I passed Mark Adriance and Mark Belles who were headed the other way. They are driving to Vernon, BC, today on the first leg of their eagerly anticipated two-week helicopter ski vacation in the Kootneys. Big smiles all around as we passed.

The lower Red Mt. trail has dried out some, and so it was a faster ride. I suffered a sloppy takedown just as I was coming to the top of the grade at the first creek crossing. Had the hill climbed, but I wasn't paying attention to my front wheel, which hooked a log and forced a detour into the ferns to recover, during the course of which I took a stick through the derailleur hanger.

Had more trouble with the drive train, which I suspect may be due to the mud I've been riding in. I'll try to take the bike into the repair shop tomorrow.

Approximately 1500 verts.

This is an excerpt from Vert Quest, which chronicles The Man Known As Mongo's pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period.
