Bruce in the Cedar Grove on Red Mt. at dusk.
Rode Red Mt with Mark after (his) work. It was a beautiful spring evening, but the ride
took on a bittersweet air for us when we discovered that the logging has begun in earnest
around the new roads punched in last fall.
Some of our trails are already gone, and the Lost Camera Loop may be next. We rode the
Loop twice, and I cleaned the descent to the creek for the first time. We also climbed up
to the Cedar Grove and then dropped down the backside. This descent used to scare me, but
it seems pretty mild by Galbraith standards.
Finally, we explored out the long west-running spur just before you hit the new road.
It was an rooty adventure, with challenge after challenge to keep going, which we did all
the way to the (dead) end. The last time we tried this a couple years ago, we weren't
nearly strong enough technically to ride it. Another pleasing bechmark.
Approximately 2000 verts.
This is an excerpt from Vert Quest, which chronicles The Man Known As Mongo's pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period.
