Herb punching up over the Big Gnarly on his single speed bike.

Rode Galbraith with Mark and Herb from Fairhaven Bike, who was on his Spot single speed. Herb left us in the dirt (bad pun) and vanished before we could get up the short new extension at the bottom of the Ridge Trail. He was blindingly fast and a very strong technical rider too. He said I was able to hang closer to him on the climbs than anybody on a geared bike he'd ever ridden with, though. When we got to the top of at the towers, we found him waiting and smoking a cigarette.

Herb began to wear down (being human) after a while, though, and I was able to out climb him on the the road up from Supercross to Arsenio. He also took the worst spill of the day, endoing on Bob's Trail and whacking his chin on a root, which drew blood. Mark showed most amazing display of technical riding, making the very sharp final switchback at the bottom of Lower Bob's Trail.

Approximately 2300 verts.

This is an excerpt from Vert Quest, which chronicles The Man Known As Mongo's pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period.
