Steve and Mark take a break somewhere deep in the Kaiser.

Rode Galbraith with Mark and Steve, having gotten my Cannondale Jekyll repaired (Steve at Fairhaven Bike bled the front brake and replaced the little plug that holds the brake line against the frame too).

I felt strong and set the pace on the up, and then again climbing the first section of Kaiser. When I finally stopped and Steve and Mark caught up with me deep in the Kaiser, Steve said, "man, you were setting quite a pace, both in terms of your speed and the technical level of your riding. I thought to myself, 'he can't keep this up all the way.'"

Steve then proceeded to get body slammed twice in 20 seconds. He got up and rode a dozen feet more and found that his rear derailier was jammed into his rear spokes. We got this fixed OK, but then a little later Steve endoed into the creek on Kaiser.

I was right behind him (off the back of the bike coming down the sheer drop to the creek bed), but I was able to dodge around him as he lay on his back in the creek. In fact, I just kept going right up the steep bank on the other side without putting my foot down.

Approximately 1500 verts.

This is an excerpt from Vert Quest, which chronicles The Man Known As Mongo's pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period.
