Mark in the mist on Wonderland right after the log jump up.
Rode Galbraith with Mark and Steve on what turned out to be one of the wettest rides of the year.
Steve took a bad fall right at the entrance to Wonderland, coming down hard on his forearm on the rock. He sat stupefied in pain in the middle of the trail for a couple of minutes afterwards.
Later at the very top of the big drop that launches Bob's Trail, I endoed in dramatic fashion. Steve said I did a pretty good imitation of Superman flying, arms outstretched and all. I flew about 15 feet into a pile of woody debris, but fortunately only sustained a scrape on my shin and a cut on my thumb.
This crash was partly due to the fact that my back brakes suddenly failed at this
moment, forcing me to try to slow down enough to make the sharp right hand turn at the
bottom of the drop with just the front brake. I got as far back as I could on the bike,
but this just ended up lengthening the arc of my hurl.
Belles, meanwhile, was amazing. Riding his ten year old Kona mud bike, which is the
heaviest bike of the three -- with a rigid front fork no less -- he absolutely cleaned
Steve and me on the most outlandishly technical sections. On Lower Bob's Trail in
particular, I saw him make both climbing and descending moves that were amazing... before
he left me behind in the mud.
When we got through, every single piece of clothing and gear was completely soaked and
had to be rung out.
