Jimmy Breitenstein riding a log roll over deep in Kaiser, while Mark rounds the same corner heading the other way.
Rode Galbraith with a fast crew composed of Mark, Tom and Jimmy.
We climbed to Arsenio, ripped Purple Heart and Kung Fu Theater, and then continued climbing to the Towers at the top. Jimmy, who has a piereced nipple and is in great shape, beat everybody to the top, but I was right behind him (I let him get 30 yards ahead and then began my sprint at the last switchback).
Jimmy hit a tree in Keystone (producing a large welt on his stomach) and then took a ugly endo at the very bottom of Scoobie Doo, body slamming right onto the hard gravel road. If I had taken either of those hits, I probably would have been done for the day, but it hardly seemed to phase Jimmy. Ahh to be in your late 20s.
My best moment was probably in lower Keystone, where I rode the drop into the creek for
the first time -- and then got my baggy shorts hung up on the seat when everyone turned to
look.
I broke the rear axle on my Cannondale Jekyll near the end of the day when we were down on the south side of the mountain on Lost Giants. All of a sudden, my pedals went around but they didn't drive the rear wheel. Mark had his rear axle break in exactly the same place two weeks ago.
