Jimmy riding my Specialized FSR XC on the New Kaiser, including (below) riding the new teeter-totter.

Rode Galbraith with Jimmy on a glorious early winter day. Jimmy's bike was still a little lame from the last ride (when he taco'd his rear on the catwalk on Lost Giants), so he rode my Specialized Stumpjumper FSR XC and wore my extra riding shoes.

We had a great romp down from Arsenio through Purple Heart and Kung Fu Theater. In fact, it was the first time I ever made Kung Fu all the way without stopping or putting a foot down. The final challenge was the big Bad Boy log pile rollover in the heart of the tight stunt S's. I aced it with a track stand on the top and bottom for extra style points.

Next we rode up the New Kaiser, which was wonderful. Coolest of all, we found a new teeter-tooter that someone has put in somewhere around the middle. Jimmy and I both rode it the first time we saw it.

Then we sprinted up to the Towers and rode down the upper Tower Trail, and the Wonderland connector, Wonderland and Supercross. I was celebrating with a few big, high speed jumps on the waterbars on the old logging road connector when I had my second high speed crash in three months.

The first several jumps off the waterbars were completely uneventful except for the big fun factor, but then came the one where I jumped from the sun into the shadow and landed in six or seven inches deep of hoar frost, which I didn't see too well as I flashed from sun to deep shade, and which has the effect of leaching all the strength out of the soil beneath. So the front end washed out and I was thrown down on the frozen gravel and rock at 20 plus mph. Big fun (not).

Same thing happened to me when I was riding with Jason P. on Sept. 20. I've got to remember that the danger sign is when I start to feel invincible.

Approximately 2000 verts.

Vert Quest chronicles "The Man Known As Mongo's" pursuit of the World Record for climbing on a mountain bike, 404,000 vertical feet, or the vertical equivalent of 13 sea-level-to-summit ascents of Mt. Everest during a 12 month period. Mongo's mountain bike climbing tricks are distilled in Mongo's Over-the-top Guide to Climbing.
