Eyewitness accounts of the Battle of the Little Bighorn

Stanislas Roy

Peter Thompson
Medal of Honor

Charles Windolph

Medal of Honor
1946 account

TWENTY-FOUR Seventh Cavalry troopers received the Congressional Medal of Honor for bravery at the battle of the Little Bighorn. It is exceptional that so many Medals of Honor were awarded in a battle of this size, and equally exceptional that not a single medal went to an officer. See the complete list below.

All four of the eye-witness accounts here from American Medal of Honor winners come from individuals who volunteered for the extremely dangerous -- and absolutely essential -- water brigade duty. Goldin, Roy and Thompson were members of the water brigade, while Windolf was a sharpshooter who exposed himself to provide them cover fire.

Interestingly, Goldin and Thompson both started the battle with Custer, and ended it with Reno and Benteen. Thompson was also the last man to get out of Custer's command alive, and the last man to see Custer alive. See Who Killed Custer - Top Ten List for more info.

Meanwhile, Charles Windolf got the last word, literally. His 1946 account of the battle was the last published by a Little Bighorn survivor.

It should also be emphazised that there were many more brave Americans at the Little Bighorn than are honored here. For instance, Jacob Adams was on the dangerous water brigade -- and nearly escaped being hit by a Sioux marksman -- but he did not receive the Medal of Honor, and John McGuire participated in "Hanley's Mule Chase," but he didn't receive the Medal of Honor either.

Neither did Capt. Frederick Benteen, who was by all accounts the bravest American on the field, and the architect of the Americans' survival -- those who did survive.
